Microsofts "Mejorana 1" Quantum Computing chip

Mejorana 1 is Microsoft’s first quantum computing chip designed to support topological qubits, a breakthrough approach that aims to make quantum computing more stable and scalable.

Named after Majorana zero modes, exotic quantum states theorized to protect information from environmental noise, Mejorana 1 is built to operate in cryogenic environments and integrates seamlessly with Microsoft's Azure Quantum platform. Unlike traditional superconducting or trapped-ion qubits, the chip focuses on topological quantum computing, which offers enhanced fault tolerance and qubit stability by encoding quantum information in more robust physical structures.

Mejorana 1 marks a significant step in Microsoft's long-term vision for building a scalable, fault-tolerant quantum computer capable of solving complex problems far beyond the reach of classical machines.

What is a Qubit?

Unlike a classical bit, which can be either 0 or 1, a qubit can exist in a superposition of both states at once, enabling quantum computers to process complex calculations more efficiently.
